A new Prime Minister and President can work together for peace
Posted by Alan Collins on Sunday, January 21st, 2007 at 13:21

Tony Blair and George Bush were both fairly effective leaders of their Countries. Both sought to uphold truth and honesty, and worked hard to do the best for their respective Countries. Side by side, they condemned the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorist attacks, and side by side, with the blessing of the United Nations, went to war in Afghanistan.

But their legacies will be rightfully blackened by one, fear-inducing word: Iraq! Because, side by side, they angered the international community, defied the United Nations, and illegally invaded Iraq, providing false evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction to sell the war to their people.

Someone arrest John Reid for theft
Posted by Alan Collins on Saturday, January 20th, 2007 at 23:15

“I am afraid that I do not think that that is the right way to proceed on security.” Those were the patronising words resounded by Tony Blair during Prime Minister’s Questions on 10th January 2007, following a suggestion by the Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron, that the Home Office be split into two separate Departments, one dealing with terrorism, the other with what can be referred to as “justice”.

So imagine how angry David Cameron must feel now, as tonight it has emerged that, following a review that has taken nearly nine months to complete, Home Secretary John Reid is “recommending a separate national security department which would be responsible for anti-terrorism policy, immigration and the security services”, according to the BBC. Mr. Cameron has reason to be angry, not at the proposals, but at the fact that the Prime Minister dismissed a sensible idea just ten days before his Home Secretary recommended it.

Expect one of my usual full-length opinions as more facts emerge tomorrow, and when Parliament opens its doors again on Monday.

Why the Government should stop wasting our money
Posted by Alan Collins on Friday, January 19th, 2007 at 16:40

EMAIt is every man (and, so as not to be unnecessarily sexist woman’s) dream to win the lottery. They dream of having the multi-million pound payout to spend on lavish adventures and glorious luxuries. If they were to miraculously overcome the 1 in 13,983,816 chance of hitting the jackpot, you would not have any idea of what to do with such a vast amount of money.

Consider, then, that you are the Education Minister, and you have a spare £570 million to spend in your Department’s budget. Which worthwhile enterprise within the Department for Education and Skills would you invest it in? Now, I don’t parade as mind reader, but I am willing to bet that you wouldn’t invest that money in the tobacco and alcohol industries, would you?

Farewell to sensible governance
Posted by Alan Collins on Saturday, January 13th, 2007 at 18:58

On Friday 12th January, the Department for Education and Skills confirmed plans to raise the school leaving age to 18, according to the BBC news website.

Already, the Government has attempted such desperate measures as the incredulous waste of tax-payers’ money, the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA), but this plan, if implemented, could have seriously damaging repercussions throughout the Country, including, but not limited to, defence and tradesmanship.
