Not something I created, but…
Posted by Alan Collins on Thursday, March 29th, 2007 at 19:18
Charles Clarke’s wannabe leader David Miliband wrote an article in the Daily Telegraph today, saying he’s in tune with the ‘I can’ generation.
Reading through the website’s comments feature, I came accross a highly amusing and worryingly true response:
The era of “I can”.
I can - knife someone and get away with it.
I can - shoot someone and get away with it.
I can - mug someone and get away with it.
I can - terrorize a neighbourhood and get away with it.
I can - lie about Iraq and get away with it.
I can - mismanage the economy and get away with it.
I can - squeeze the taxpayers and get away with it.
I can - screw the armed forces and get away with it.
I can - destroy education and get away with it.
I can - ruin the NHS and get away with it.
I can - do what I like and get away with it!
What would my faithful local Labout MP, having just praised Gordon Brown’s “Budget for the future” (full post later) think of that?

Bitterness, fighting and games of politics with people’s lives; I smell an election in the air
Posted by Alan Collins on Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 at 20:51

Today is an important day. No, not because I have just 17 days until I fly over to Florida for two weeks. It is in fact the beginning of a 5-week (or, to be more precise, 37-day) local election campaign. Officially.
I say that because the dial (ranging from one to ten) on the pre-election spin machine is already set to a fairly moderate 6 (with constant yet only slight increases), with fighting, playing dangerous games of politics with people’s lives and biased newspapers.

Councillor Chishti runs the Reading half marathon to raise money for charity and Gillingham & Rainham Conservatives
Posted by Alan Collins on Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 at 17:46

Conservative Cllr Rehman Chishti is celebrating his successful running of the Reading Half Marathon, which took place on the 24th of March to raise money for good causes in Rainham and Gillingham and for the victims of the tragic Kashmir Earthquake. The Gillingham and Rainham Councillor ran a total of 13.1 miles in 2 Hours 20 Minutes and 27 seconds.
The time is a personal best for the 28 year-old Medway Conservative Councillor, who will be running the Isle of Wight Half Marathon in August to raise money for maintenance work for St Margaret’s Church*.

Diary: an opinion poll and change of home for Alan Collins’ Political Opinions
Posted by Alan Collins on Friday, March 23rd, 2007 at 14:41
Friday 23rd March, 2007
It seems as though my diary is becoming more frequent on this blog than my opinions, but my diary entries are normally shorter. I am about to start writing a post on the local elections, and my post about party funding will be completed sometime this weekend. In the mean time, I shall talk about another opinion poll which puts Cameron’s Conservatives on top again.
After Gordon Brown’s very Political budget, commentators have been waiting for the first opinion poll to signify how much people now liked Mr. Brown, because he has acted to make them seem like they are going to be better off after his tax cuts, when he has in fact, using even stealthier tax rises and boundary changes, screwed the nation over for a tenth year running. It was not to be.

Stale and under Brown, Labour are heading for an avoidable electoral catastrophe
Posted by Alan Collins on Tuesday, March 20th, 2007 at 12:17
Lord Turnbull, his former Permanent Secretary, described him as being “cynical, insulting and as ruthless as Stalin”. 72% of voters would not vote for him, according to an ICM/Guardian opinion poll published yesterday. He is a Chancellor who has managed to cut the average gross annual pension by £15,900 (or 77.5%) since 1997, when he stripped them of their tax-free status in his very first budget.
Despite the increasing build-up of hatred for Gordon Brown, a lot of the Labour faithful are strongly in support of his ascent to the Leadership of the Party, and thus the Premiership of the Country. Are they the side of the Party that deserve a medal, or should they be put in straight jackets and chucked in a padded cell (if there are any of them left given Mr. Brown’s funding record), never to be seen again?
