John Reid suggests adopting yet another Tory policy

JOHN Reid is at it again. Just months after suggesting that the Home Office split in two, which the Conservatives swiftly opposed once it was adopted, the outgoing Home Secretary has suggested opting out of a “key” provision in the European human rights law.

Although unfortunately not going the whole nine yards and completely pulling out of the law, Mr. Reid has “told MPs he might trigger existing powers to ”derogate’’ from Article Five of the European convention which prohibits detention without trial”, according to the telegraph.co.uk article.

The move comes after six of 17 terrorists on Control Orders have absconded because existing powers are too weak, according to Mr. Reid, who told the House of Commons today that “We will consider other options – which include derogation – if we have exhausted ways of overturning previous judgments on this issue.

“Under our existing law, control orders are as far as we can go. Unfortunately under these limitations, within the existing legal framework, it is very difficult to prevent determined individuals from absconding.”
