Medway Council agrees to buy the Tardis
COUNCILLORS present at last week’s Full Council meeting unanimously agreed to move the Council headquarters from the current three sites to the former Lloyds building in Dock Road, Chatham, referred to as the Tardis for its size.
The move which will cut unnecessary costs and help protect the environment by removing the need for some Council staff to move between buildings.
Although welcomed by members of all side, concerns were expressed about the sale of the Municipal Buildings, the fascia of which many have sentimental attachments to.
However it was agreed to go ahead with the sale, because, although it would be a shame to lose the fascia, Medway Council is a new Council that should be looking to the future, not the past.
The move should be completed in April 2008.

Actually, it was the fact that — every time we opened a door or turned a corner — yet another huge expanse of office space opened up before us, giving the impression it is much larger on the inside than it appeared to be from without
This is a tremendous outcome for the council, and the staff will love it there (as I said at that Full Council meeting). It will unite the Unitary Authority at long last, the building is better built and will cost far less to maintain, releasing funds for front-line council services.
I was fortunate in knowing someone who had worked at the Gun Wharf place for several years, so I knew what to expect during the tour we had on the evening before the Council met.
As vice-chairman of the “corporate-level” Scrutiny Committee, I was responsible for ensuring that all Parties’ views were correctly brought to the Council meeting the following evening. One of those was that we should seek to find ways that the Muni’ facade could be retained (possibly the whole building exterior) and indeed I spoke to the Council Leader about this before the Council meeting began.
We have some good ideas between us…
