A disheartening but inevitable attack

RATHER sadly I find myself having to write on this blog on a terrorist attack, though I am fortunately not commenting on fatalities.

Following two car bombs being found and manually difused yesterday, a disheartening follow-up attempt occured in Glasgow, one which should always have been anticipated by the Security Services – if only in theory.

The Security Services do a fantastic job, but one can only imagine that the public has been saved from disaster three times now by luck – the first by the vigilance of passing paramedics, the second by a vigilant member of the public and the third by what appears to have been incompetent planning by the terrorists.

When the second car bomb was found yesterday, I commented to some people that, while the full force of the anti-terrorist officers was concentrated on London, the next bomb would succeed in Manchester.

Today, a suicide attack was launched by what appears to have been suicide bombers – one weary a suicide belt – driving a jeep through the main entrance to the terminal at Glasgow Airport resulting in an explosion and fire.

Luckily no-one was killed, and there were very few injuries, but two important ideas must be drawn from this incident – first that this is not a time to start pointing the finger; this was, in essence, a failed attack, and so no orginastion will take haste in claiming responsibility.

Secondly, it reassures the British people, in a rather terrifying circumstance, that London is not the only target. It was inevitable that another part of the Country was to be targetted, and should serve as a warning to the Government not to concentrate all it’s efforts on the Capital.

These people care less for places of symbolic value and more for maximum fatalities. They would be willing to walk into a village cafe wearing an explosives belt if there were enough people in it. The Security Services are up against an almost-invisible threat, and they must be aided by us, the public.

By remaining vigilant, and by reporting suspicious activities, we can help avert attacks such as those seen two years ago. This could be the start of a sustained attack lasting days, weeks or even months, and only with communities working together and integrating socially, with their eyes wide open, can we be sure to spot possible bombs, or terrorists, and avoid further attacks or attack attempts.
