Now I know who I will be supporting for the Presidential candidacy

My support: McCain v. Clinton

ONLY today we were discussing in Government and Politics the United States Presidential Election primaries (we are after all doing UK/US Comparative Politics) – and I finally decided who I want to see fight the election next Autumn.

As a conservative ideologically, I will always support the Republicans. However, realistically I think that the next President will be a Democrat. For that reason, I would love to see Hillary Clinton (for the Democrats) chosen to fight John McCain (for the Republicans).

Why Sen. Clinton? From her first job out of law school at the Children’s Defense Fund to her time as First Lady of Arkansas and of the United States to her service in the Senate, helping children has been at the center of Hillary’s public life. In the White House, Hillary will continue her lifelong work to create a world where every child is cherished, loved, and able to fulfill his or her potential.

Hillary opposes President Bush’s plan to escalate the war and proposed, along with Senator Robert Byrd, legislation to end authority for the war in Iraq. The legislation will propose October 11, 2007 — the five year anniversary of the original resolution authorizing the use of force in Iraq — as the expiration date for that resolution.

Hillary has the experience to take on the insurance companies, work with members of Congress from both parties, and ensure that all Americans have the health care they need.

Why Sen. McCain? John McCain has led a tough and often lonely fight in Congress against wasteful spending and pork barrel projects. As one of the most tireless budget hawks in the Senate, John McCain has a long record of protecting the interest of taxpayers. As President, John McCain will not hesitate to veto every wasteful spending bill that comes across his desk.

John McCain has consistently opposed giving amnesty or public benefits to illegal immigrants. In order for illegal immigrants to become legal, they must come out of the shadows and – pay stiff fines and back taxes; undergo criminal and security checks; pass English and civics tests; remain employed for six years; and go to the back of the line.

The economic freedom provided by low marginal tax rates supports innovation and entrepreneurship – the recipe for faster growth, greater investment, and more jobs. Low taxes on dividends and capital gains promote saving, innovation, investment and growth.

John McCain prefers a market-based system of “cap and trade” that will set responsible, common sense greenhouse gas reduction goals, and provide economic incentives for entrepreneurs, innovators, and the business community at large to achieve them

These are two formidable characters and a Presidential election with these two face to face would be one in which, whoever won, America would have a wonderful President to undo the disastrous mistakes of the Bush administration.
