The lighter side of politics

I JUST had to end the week on this.
This was a photograph I found over at Strood Conservatives, uploaded by regular ACPO contributor Cllr John Ward (sorry John). The genuine affection displayed in the embrace between John and the dog speaks volumes to discredit critics of politicians (such as my former dance partner (no explanation offered) and my many friends at school (no explanation needed)).
Plus – isn’t it so cute (the dog, I mean)? Don’t worry folks – I’ll be back to my normal serious self tomorrow!

Oh, that picture! Of all those I uploaded, you had to pick…
Oh, well. A word of explanation might be useful. As neither the then Mayor nor Deputy Mayor was available for the PDSA open day in Gillingham, I was asked to substitute.
Not only did I open the event, I was also asked to judge one of the heats in the dog competition — Best Puppy. This one was my choice, even though it was a bit big for a puppy!
My friend Adelaide (whom you have seen with me a couple of times, Alan) was with me on that occasion and had thought to take her camera, hence the photo.
Still, it’s better than the traditional politician’s “public friendly” face involving babies. I prefer the dogs, myself!
Be careful what you wish for – I could have chosen the photograph of you holding the glass of something which looked highly alcoholic
Thanks for the explanation, though. I was wondering.
Coo! Threatening me with my own photographs now, are we?
I might well be holding a glass of something “highly alcoholic” (well, not all that highly, I suppose!) but as I have a self-compensating metabolism that adjusts to negate the effects it doesn’t really matter.
Sometimes I reduce that system’s effectiveness by, say, 20% or 30%, in social situations, but most of the time I am completely unaffected. My colleagues are sometimes puzzled by this…
See, I don’t have that problem at all.
As a good 17 year-old I don’t drink alcohol…

Yes, as I noticed at the garden party at Lincoln’s Inn, not so long ago. Remind me: how many glasses of champagne was that?
Aah but you see that was a different matter – I had the choice of drinking Pimms or champagne and I chose the lesser of two evils.
Besides I had one-and-a-half glasses – I didn’t much like it and so ended up leaving half a glass on a nearby table and walking away…
And what was wrong with the juice that was provided for the younger guests, eh? I had two of those myself and they were very refreshing.
(Score now 40-30)
There was juice!?!
Seriously, it was the lesser of three evils – I don’t like Pimms, don’t like orange, so I had to put up with champagne.
Besides, I was hardly likely to get drunk on that…
“Deuce”.
Okay, I suppose I’ll just have to let you off this time
