Boris elected London Mayoral candidate

IT MUST have been an interesting meeting up at CCHQ. “What is the best way to get students on board?” the question may have been. “Students love freebies,” goes the response. “Hmm. Free Conservative balloons? Free Conservative keyrings, perhaps?” “Yes, but there is one thing guaranteed to get them on board…”

As we stood on the stall at the University freshers fair handing out “I *heart* Boris” badges (I told you, guaranteed…), we had no idea that Londoners had overwhelmingly chosen Boris as the Conservative London Mayoral candidate.

You can read the full version over at ConservativeHome, but basically the King of Clangers received 79.0% of the votes to become the only real opposition to “King Newt”, beating Victoria Borwick (9.4%), Andrew Boff (8.4%) and Warwick Lightfoot (3.1%).

All I can say is well done Boris. And good luck.

  1. I hope you realise that if he does win against Red Ken (“King Newt”? I’ve not heard that one before!) the “floormop” hairstyle will become de rigeur among London’s blond fellas ;-)

I hope he does win, actually: I think it would bring a refreshing change to London, and certainly an improvement (despite the inevitable gaffes!) to the way debates — as televised on BBC Parliament — are conducted.

Ken has been a smooth and smart operator; but to anyone able to see past the “front” (which isn’t all that difficult) it has been fairly obvious all along that he has never been the right kind of person for that job.

  2. Alan Collins says:

Hey the name didn’t come from me:

“As I visited all of London’s 32 boroughs in the last few weeks, the message is loud and clear – King Newt’s days are numbered.” – Boris Johnson.

I knew that, but wondered whether either you or any others reading this might know the origin of this expression.

I don’t suppose it matters, really, but it has got me wondering. I’ve just looked at some of the newts in my pond, and I can’t really see a resemblance — they are all far more appealing than Red Ken ;->

  4. Further to this: watching and listening to Boris at the Conservative Party Conference today, I was impressed with him more than I had expected.

Yes, there was a bit of what I call “guff” in there, when he was clearly running out of time (he had been allocated just eight minutes to speak) and was rushing a bit; but I get the strong feeling that he really would be a far, far better Mayor than Ken Livingstone has ever been, and far more in touch with the needs of the Capital and its communities.

Before today I wouldn’t necessarily have realised that!
