Labour preparing for a snap election
THE BBC has been reporting that the Labour Party has asked the unions to pay next year’s party affiliation fees now – providing an extra £6m for the Labour Party coffers.
Nick Robinson has claimed that Labour has, in the last 24-28 hours, been getting in a “lot more fundraising”, immediately after Gordon Brown’s presumed consideration period over the weekend, and the unions have been asked to make their call centres available for Labour use this weekend.
Could an announcement be drawing close?

Interesting turnabout by Nick Robinson! His reporting of our Party Conference has been lukewarm, and to be honest is an inadequate quality of reporting of this event.
My findings so far have been that it has raised the bar still further from its high point of two years ago, nearly equalled last year, and surpassed this year. There is no question about that in my mind.
If Gordon Brown were to work from the public polls alone, he would definitely go to the people now. If he were being more prudent (to use his own favourite word!) he would take heed of the additional polls available to his Party, and certainly note what has been happening at Blackpool this week.
For one thing, he now knows that we have Arnie the “Governator” firmly on our side
Here in Rochester and Strood, I am now content that we can put up a suitable candidate at short notice, without having one imposed upon us, using the by-election procedures.
Meanwhile, I hear that the Labour party are apparently required to have a female-only short-list for their candidate (who also hasn’t yet been selected) which heartens me no end, knowing what the outcome there is most likely to be. We’ll almost certainly take that seat!
