Medway Council Conservatives seek Political Assistant

Do you live in Medway and have a keen interest in Politics? Do you believe in the Conservative Party and agree with it’s aims and policies? Do you fancy working for the Conservative Group on Medway Council?

If the answer to the above is yes, then maybe you should head over to the Conservative Party website and take a look at their jobs section. At the moment, they are advertising for a Political Assistant for the Medway Council Conservative Group, the largest group on the Council, to work fixed-term until May 2011.

The position became vacant after the previous Political Assistant, left for a slightly different direction in life, although my sources have advised me that he has not lost interest in the Conservative Party and has indicated that he may wish to continue to have an active role within the Party in tandem with his new career direction.

Anyone who is interested in the position, which is non-political (with political restriction in accordance with the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 – i.e. no Party political campaigning etc.) but rather liaising with Council Officers on behalf of the Group, can view the advert here, and the closing date for applicants is January 8, 2008.

  1. Well, I have to admit that I am now starting to miss having a tall, slim, young and enthusiastic Conservative as our Political Assistant, and am beginning to wish there were someone of similar description in the field, who could take over.

I don’t suppose you happen to know of anyone like that, by any chance?

I was beginning to picture in mind someone I know who fitted that description, until you mentioned the word “slim”, which ruled out everyone I know…

  3. Take a look in the mirror sometime, young man! :-)

  4. Alan Collins says:

I did suspect you were talking about me, but then you said slim, and that is a word I would certainly never use to describe myself.

Anyway, you wouldn’t want me; a – I would be useless, and b – it would mean I’d have to stop blogging :o ! Plus I’d have to throw away my education etc. (I know about all these things because I have been doing research – I have to admit the idea intriguied me when the job was advertised first time round).

Anyway, I must dash. I have got to go do something I quite enjoy and would hate having to stop doing – campaigning!

Actually, after more than nine years of the Cabinet-plus-Scrutiny system here in Medway, do we really still need Political Assistants? Many similar councils do not employ them, and the Tax-Payers’ Alliance has specifically targeted them as one of four “unnecessary council jobs”, as they term them.

They place them in the same category as Diversity and Climate Change Officers. In this time of austerity, perhaps this (along with the others identified by the TPA as apparently worthless) should be the kind of post to be scrapped now. I shall be suggesting as much at Council tomorrow evening…
