I just went “off message”

I have just finished writing a research essay for Government and Politics, in which I argued against the shrinking of the civil service in this Country.

It is completely off message in terms of official Conservative Party policy, but I shall later post an edited version of this essay on this blog – because I feel that the Conservative Party should be careful when promising cuts in bureaucracy.

And I await the barrage of abuse from Conservatives who disagree with my thinking.

  1. There’s probably nothing wrong with your thinking. I worked for 22 years in the Civil Service, and my father for quite a bit longer than that.

We both know that it isn’t the size of the Civil Service that is, in and of itself, the real issue. The true question is: whom does it serve — itself, the politicians themselves, or the nation?

It has been the wholesale abuse of the Civil Service over the last decade — much of which has been fairly widely reported, thankfully — that is what needs to be dealt with, as the Service has been turned ever more closely akin to the old Soviet Union methodology.

They should be spending their time and efforts supporting the country and making things flow and work properly, not creating and maintaining a super-centralised and over-dominant State Machine.

Thus it is not the size that matters per se, just the emphasis.
