I’m sorry I broke the law, m’lud, now can I go home for tea?
It would seem as though Her Majesty’s Government have been watching a bit too much Monty Python and have become confused with the difference between reality and absurdity.
During the scene (below), Michael Norman Randall is told that he has been found guilty of the murder of no less than 20 people on a single morning. However, following a very apologetic ramble, and despite his own protestations, he is given a six-month suspended sentence.
One of the reasons why this is so amusing is that it is absurdly unrealistic. BUT: that could all change, if the government gets it’s way. The Conservatives are attacking the proposals which, if passed, would mean that young offenders would be let off their crimes if they apologised to their victims!
But Michael Gove, the shadow children’s secretary, said the plan would make it “even easier for young criminals to get away with the harm they do to others. We have a serious problem with rising violence in schools and rising youth violence on the streets. We need tough rules on discipline in school and tougher action on street violence but the Government unfortunately is going in the wrong direction.” Too right!
