  1. Well done, you lot!

It’s good to get some good news on our Secondary Schools. This evening I shall be at Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee, where we are looking at the Chapter and Temple Schools situation in Strood.

Rather like the Kobayashi Maru scenario (see the opening few minutes of the second Star Trek movie — The Wrath of Khan — to understand that reference!) there is no “perfect” option available to us, and it will end up being a test of character more than anything else.

  2. Alan Collins says:

Hmm, yes, *that* discussion – no doubt it will be an interesting meeting for you tonight.

I am split on the issue, although I think the bull-in-a-china-shop approach the Council seemed to be favouring will be disastrous, which is why I, too, have signed the SOCK petition, and am promoting it on my petitions page.

  3. I specifically mentioned that I liked their approach, but would we be allowed to take this more staged approach? Apparently the Minister involved has said no, and once again we have no choice and are being dictated so (which wording I also used at the meeting) which I very much regret.

In the end there was no alternative but to recommend to Cabinet (who can either accept or reject anything we suggest anyway) going for the Academy — though it took more than three hours to get there. It was in many ways a very good meeting, spoiled in places by a few, but disappointing in its eventual outcome.

  4. Alan Collins says:

I must admit, having seen the agenda for the meeting, I was curious as to how long it would go on for, considering the huge impact the O&S’s decision would likely have.

I was not there, so I obviously cannot comment on the meeting, but the decision is disappointing, even if the Council was forced into submission by the government flexing its muscles once again.

  5. Rob says:

Are you into Star Trek then John?
