Jarrett hits out at Murray over choice of language

The Deputy Leader of Medway Council, Councillor Alan Jarrett, hit out at Cllr Teresa Murray’s choice of language during a debate of the full Council.
Cllr Murray introduced an amendment to a motion about concessionary bus fares, and called all those who opposed her motion (i.e. the present Conservatives along with Independent Councillor Ian Burt) “nutters”.
Cllr Jarrett used his next speaking opportunity to hit back, reminding the Council of a recent Standards Committee ruling, saying that the use of the word “nutters” in a defamatory context was unacceptable.

I don’t think any of the Standards Committee independent members, who monitor some of our meetings, was there last night, so the “usual suspects” in the Labour Group played to the media more-or-less unchecked. Even so, they know they are effectively on probation after all Group Leaders were called in by the Standards Committee to be “told it like it is” on behaviour at meetings.
Meanwhile, Cllr Mrs Murray has had at least two formal complaints made about her behaviour to the Standards Board for England, but it looks as though no action is likely to be taken in either case, both of which brought our office of elected local councillor into disrepute, and obviously so.
As one involved procuring personal information — and then proceeding to wave the papers of it around in the Council Chamber in open session (i.e. with press and public in attendance), this does look as if the Board isn’t doing its job anywhere near as well as our local Standards Committee. This in itself is a good enough reason to shut down that remote and expensive quango.
