David is splendid, and will make a very enjoyable, easy-going Mayor who will delight all those he meets, I believe.
I have a feeling that his approach in the Council Chamber will prove to be good-humoured but with just the right level of control where needed. I suspect that he will be respected by Members from all sides.
I am inclined to agree – to an extent.
Oh sure he is a splendid choice and will make an excellent Mayor.
However, after certain heckles from certain members of the Labour Group at the end of Thursday night’s meeting leads me to wonder whether all of them will indeed respect him when he takes office in May.
I certainly hope so.
Aha! You spotted my “members from all sides” rather than “all members from all sides” up there…
There will indeed be the usual suspects who always behave badly — even when their own Mayor tries to bring order to a meeting — and we both know who they are!
Good Humor is the key to good governance then?

There are many keys to good governance.
Good humour is one strong aid to running meetings well and smoothly, as most if not all training outfits seem to agree. I have been to “chairing meetings” training by three of them myself…
It also helps the Mayor’s other (in fact, main) job, which is to be out in the community at hundreds of events of various kinds during the mayoral year.
This will typically include meeting and being host to visitors from elsewhere in the country or the world, as well as visiting local schools, hospitals, clubs and homes for older people and those with disabilities, and hosting various charity fund-raising events. It’s a full life!
And the rewards even fuller!
“And the rewards even fuller!”
Well, there is a tendency to put on weight during the Mayoral year; but to her credit, the current Mayor of Medway has lost a fair chunk of weight during the past ten months. Many of us sponsored her for this, so it’s well done to Cllr Val Goulden!
“and the rewards are even fuller!”
What makes this guy such a good future mayor?
Is it his large shoe size?
I asked him this evening, but he wouldn’t tell me what his shoe size is, so I cannot assist further with this line of enquiry…
