Rochester and Strood Conservatives to choose parliamentary candidate

Rochester and Strood Conservatives are currently in the process of choosing their parliamentary candidate.

According to CCHQ, applications closed last Friday (May 30). If the association works at the same speed as Gillingham and Rainham last year, their candidate could be chosen by July 7.

I can think of a number of candidates who would be suitable for the seat, although I am keeping quiet as to whom I would prefer to be chosen.

I will try and keep you updated as to the selection process’ progress as much as possible.

Hat-tip: ConservativeHome. Also thanks to samantha who picked up on this before I had gotten round to writing this article.

Come on Alan , you have never been one to hold back

who are the people you would like to see contesting this seat ?

anyway its great its finally happening , must go kids supper will burn .

  2. John Ward says:

I for one want to see Alan Collins himself contesting a seat one day!

  3. Alan Collins says:

Samantha – I think I have made it pretty clear in the past the candidates I would favour to contest this seat. However, I look forward to supporting – and assisting – whichever candidate is elected.

It is fantastic that they are now selecting, though.

John – I cannot deny that one day I may consider contesting a Parliamentary seat. However, now and for the foreseeable future, my priority lies in Twydall ward.

    Alan

That was essentially what I was indicating — hence those magic words “one day” :-)

No pressures: there ‘s plenty of time. I just tend to think well ahead…

  5. samantha says:

Yes Alan i agree with John you would make a wonderful candidate in the near future i hope, we need new blood shaking things up a bit .

as for Rochester and Strood i have skimmed through your comments and you have suggested Vicky Ford James Brokenshire and a man who has drawn a lot of interest on your site Tony Lit

i just hope cchq keep there noses out and let the association pick the candidate they want .

  6. Alan Collins says:

John – I guessed as much, but I thought it was probably best to clarify my position.

I, too, tend to think well ahead. Last year I created my ten-year plan and, though flexible, let’s just say looking for a seat to contest wasn’t a part of it.

Samantha – Thank you for your kind words.

Yes, they are the three candidates I would prefer the final candidate to be chosen from. However, as I said above, I look forward to supporting – and assisting – whichever candidate is elected.

I think, on the whole, CCHQ have kept well out of the selection procedures of all constituencies. Obviously they will have preferred candidates, but their general ethos is one of local choice, and leave associations free to choose.

Rochester and Strood is generally known as a strong, independent association, and will have problems in choosing the candidate who they want.

  7. samantha says:

So you guys who are in the Know , when is the shortlist going to be annouced ?

as for ten year plan i find it hard planning ten days in advance !!

  8. Alan Collins says:

Samantha – Associations don’t generally announce their shortlists before the selection committee has whittled them down to a final shortlist for the Big Event/Primary (I am unaware which procedure R&S are using). As for when that may be, I couldn’t honestly tell you.

  9. samantha says:

I think they should publish them , as for the main runners i think its Mark Reckless and Tony Lit , Vicky Ford is now on the MEP list as a candidate now so that rules her out very good candidate though, and James Brokenshire will be concentrating on castle point i hear on the grapvine .

  10. John Ward says:

    For information…

Those who will be involved in the Big Event have been sworn to secrecy, so even I cannot find out who survived the initial sift and will be interviewed.
