Cutting the grass … at last!

Charing Road sign

It’s not often I am critical of the Council, but I find myself having to make an exception as, until this week, I never knew how hard it was for a local authority to cut the grass on land which is their responsibility.

Today, for the third day in a row, Medway Council’s contractors are out on the grass verges outside my house ensuring that the wilderness that was disgracefully allowed to grow over the past couple of months (to a length which even partly obscured the above ghastly road sign) was tamed.

In past years the Council sent round their grass cutters fairly regularly, which meant that the grass verges outside my house could be covered in less than an hour. However, for whatever reason this year the verges were neglected and only now has the Council decided to act.

The trouble is, in leaving it so late to cut the grass, the Council have made even more work for their contractors, and no doubt has to stretch taxpayers’ money a little to cover it.

When all it would have taken was a quick cut just a couple of weeks ago.

    John Ward Says:

This came up at Full Council yesterday evening. The rate of grass growing this season has caught out many (most? all?) Local Authorities, and it has been very difficult to keep up with it.

Even so, there have been issues with the contractor, Quadron, and it took the issuing of several “default notices” (or whatever they’re called officially) to get them to deal effectively with the situation at some locations around Medway.

Most such places have been fine, actually, including around my way; but I accept that it hasn’t been easy to keep up to standard everywhere. You should see my lawn, for example — or perhaps you shouldn’t!
