Woolworths: where will all the Chavs go now?

As per usual you can trust us Brits to make the best out of a dire situation by resorting to humour.

Brilliant comedian Mitch Benn produced the following song in recognition of the closure of the 99 year-old store Woolworths, performing it on the BBC Now radio show.

It is one of our greatest attributes to be able to laugh our way through the darkest periods, but it must not be forgotten, on the day Twydall’s Woolworths closed for the very last time, that 27,000 people are now looking for new jobs which are few and far between.

The last stores will be closing next Monday, unless a last-minute buyer is found, and no doubt the scenes I witnessed in the Twydall store, with areas cordoned off as shelving and other fixtures were removed for sale, will be repeated nationwide as stores cease to trade.

Despite the humour presented here, it is a dark day for Twydall’s economy.

it was a very sad day for Twydall when Woolworths shut it’s doors for the last time, 46 years in the centre and it was the hub of the shops

steve bowring – I quite agree that it was a very sad day for Twydall. It was distressing to see people packing the shop and clambering for bargains whilst the staff faced abuse, extra work and the knowledge that they would soon be unemployed.

Already the change in Twydall has been noticeable. There is less of a buzz about the centre and some of the other local businesses appear to be losing out on trade as well.

We can only hope that another big name moves in to the site and boosts the local economy once again.

Alan, who would you like to move into the empty shop? A 99p shop or Iceland, or someone else?

Also, talking of laughing at yourself, this amused me.

  4. Alan Collins says:

What Twydall needs is a new shop which will complement the other shops already established and trading in Twydall Green.

That means that a 99p shop could conflict with Loose Change which, though not a 99p shop itself, provides some cheap goods along the lines of those one would expect to find in a 99p shop.

Although its presence would boost the overall local economy, Iceland would endanger the two existing food stores, namely The Co-operative Food and Spar.

Ideally, I would like to see Wilkinson move in. They offer many of the same goods as Woolworths did, plus a wider range of other goods, and also offer better value for money.

Of course both the Blockbuster and florist shops have remained empty for some time, so I don’t intend to hold my breath for a new shop to appear with any haste.

I hadn’t even realised Blockbuster had gone!

But yeah, Wilkinson is a good choice. The Wilkinson in Rainham Shopping Centre is great – there’s nothing they don’t do!!

    Except oven gloves, it seems.

I heard that Pricebusters were moving there
