Whilst appreciating the concerns over the economy and the ability to repay debt in the future, what about the situation for a child born next month to a family in the West Midlands whose main wage earner has just been made redundant as nothing was done to get the economy moving! By this campaign the Tories give the impression that they don’t care about these people now!
Do we turn our backs on hard working families who find themselves in this situation through no fault of their own in favour of worrying about the future – do we take more out of the economy in a recession by making public spending cuts in order to fund the tax cut on savings interest?
If the answer is yes to get the Daily Mail onside without even thinking about the consequences I am not convinced that it is the right way to go. If you were to fund it by putting a bit more on fuel tax in view of the sharp fall in prices now that might be workable, but even then with interest rates on savings at the level they are the effect of this scheme would be neglible! This money would be best invested in the High Speed Rail Link talked about instead of a third runway at Heathrow.
If we had invested North Sea Oil money in a sovereign fund this would have paid for infrastructure improvements without becoming a strain on public finances now. If is always a good word to use in a crisis, but I do not think that the way to alleviate the situation the world finds itself in is by doing nothing, which is the impression that is being given by Mr Cameron
What we need is concrete proposals to regulate the financial services industry that has ripped us all off for many years. If people felt they were getting a fair return for their money they would not be concerned about 20% tax on savings if the overall tax system was fair as well
Sorry Alan I have gone on a bit but I have lost faith with the Tories in recent weeks, even though I am not convinced about Gordon Brown either!
Surely we want our politicians to do the right thing for the country as a whole and not pander to the worst elements in our press who wouldn’t personally know the effects of a recession
