Medway’s oldest bus route 101 years-old

Medway’s 101 bus route – which links the Towns to the County Town Maidstone – is 101 years old this year.

The 101 route extends to service Twydall beyond the 182 times and on Sundays, now using eight brand new Enviro 400 buses, bought by Arriva for almost ?200,000 each.

But they’re ‘a far cry’ from the original ‘solid-tyred open top buses’, says Alan Watkins in the Medway Messenger (link to follow).

And whilst ‘the 21st century Blue Bell Hill would be unrecognisable to those travelling in the early years of the last century’, according to Arriva’s local marketing manager, Richard Lewis, despite the many road layout changes, the route has ‘scarcely’ altered.

So Happy 101st Birthday to the 101!
