Alan W Collins has been passed a copy of an old newspaper clipping of Twydall Ward councillor Paul Hariott from the days when he was Mayor of Gillingham.
The article, headlined ‘The venture girls’ (see full article here), dates back at least two-and-a-half decades, although by this author’s calculations could be more than thirty years old.
The source newspaper is also a mystery, although the article focuses on the Gillingham Girls’ Venture Corps, who were being presented with awards by Cllr Harriott.
As the more recent photograph, below, shows, Cllr Harriott has changed very little since the photograph was taken all those years ago.
As is clearly visible, Cllr Harriott has lost very little hair over the years, although his smile appears to have lost its edge.
The article also stated that the girls were ‘hoping to redecorate the homes of several local pensioners’, although one source (one of the girls in the photograph) does not recall this happening.
It would make for an interesting resurrection if such a plan were re-introduced today, as Cllr Harriott’s could be one of the first homes to be redecorated.
Although he, and his wife of a few months, would have to choose between their house in Twydall, and their supposed retreat in Whitstable*.
If you have any old photographs of any of Medway’s current councillors that you think this author might like to publish, please email them to alan@alanwcollins.co.uk.
Editorial preference will be given to photographs of councillors on civic duty.
* Alan W Collins only learnt of this last Friday, when one of this author’s sources was talking about reported difficulties in contacting Cllr Harriott. The source’s claim, though trusted by this author, has not yet been confirmed by any other sources.
