Discount retailer 99p stores is to open its latest store in Gillingham High Street on Wednesday morning.
The popular discount chain is to open at 9am on Wednesday (17th June) on the site of the old Woolworths store, creating many jobs and providing a much-needed boost to the Gillingham economy.
However, news of the store’s imminent opening has already prompted a price reduction at nearby discount store Pricebusters.
Local residents used to seeing all items priced at £1 at Pricebusters will now notice a drop in 3p – as it retails items at 97p to stay in competition.

It is at times like this that I am reminded that there are little gems of ideas hidden in the Official Monster Raving Looney Party’s manifesto. In this case, the useful idea is the introduction of a 99p coin.
So many places have prices of or ending in 99p, that instead of having millions of extra one penny coins floating around purely as change for such situations, a 99p coin would remove the need.
Of course, dropping prices to 97 pence messes that up…
i all ways check in the 97p shop fist as fist of all we need to help your little shops from being killed of by the big names.
the 97P shop now do ice creams for 50P what i think is a really good idear with summer hear….
As the Loony Candidate for Gillingham, 99p coins were in my manifesto of 1997 . People just laughed at us then……….
Well, there you, Rockin’ Dave. Some of us were more perceptive, as lateral thinkers ourselves (well I am anyway, as Alan knows).
It is perhaps little surprise that I related well to JohnLoony on the UK political Usenet groups…
