LW: have Labour’s other councillors left the Labour group?
Rumours are flying that Luton and Wayfield’s councillors have left the Labour Group in protest at the selection of their party’s candidate selection for the by-election.
AlanWCollins would like to point out at this point that this ‘news’ is merely a rumour, however Medway blogger John Ward seems to be placing much faith in his source’s reliability in the past.
It seems that Councillors Tony and Val Goulden are both equally as displeased at the selection of schools campaigner Sam Whittington as Labour’s candidate in the Luton and Wayfield by-election.
Councillors Goulden and Goulden, as pointed out by John Ward, would not have to resign as councillors, but would sit as independents, almost always continuing to vote with the Labour Group, but not continuing with that label.
John Ward continues: ‘There is also another matter brewing, I am informed by another of my sources, described to me as a “smoking gun that will rip the Labour Party apart”. It will, apparently, also bring into question the judgement of one of our local MPs’.
AlanWCollins will bring to you more news on this as it comes.

The real significance is the Gouldens’ departure as members of the Labour Party. Thought to be far better organised than Rochester and Strood CLP, one wonders at the effect their departure will have within Chatham and Aylesford CLP, and whether any other internal Party issues or conflicts will emerge!
Here in Rochester and Strood the CLP seems to be virtually completely defunct, with the exception of Steve Hubbard in Strood North (and South), Bill E in River (Steve and Bill I always respect as political activists), and the "bedrock" (or is it?) of Rochester East. In most wards Labour has no activists/deliverers at all by all accounts. Peninsula, Strood Rural, Cuxton and Halling, and Rochester West are good examples. Labour also appears not to have found any new activists in Strood – the same old Rochester and Chatham residents’ names/faces appear on their website, mainly the failed candidates from 2007.
