Twydall Church listed to halt church-saving demolition

Twydall Holy Trinity - ? Alan W Collins 2009

The Twydall Holy Trinity Church building has been listed by the government in a bid by campaigners to halt its demolition.

The 45 year-old building, built by Arthur Bailey, has become uneconomical to maintain and plans were drawn up for a smaller building for the church to meet in, along with affordable housing.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport approved the English Heritage application, despite the possible ?1 million repair bill, which the small congregation is never likely to be able to meet.

The decision to demolish the building has been met with a?fiercely?divided response from Twydall residents past and present.

Caroline Ford, a regular contributor to the Church fund, said “It is indeed very sad that there is the possibility that the Church building will be demolished.

“But what I find even more sad is that the loudest protests come from people who very rarely, if ever set foot inside the Church.

“The regular congregation is small compared with the size of a church designed for the size of the parish and not the size of the congregation.”

I’m not sure what the campaigners hope to achieve. Listing a building which its users are unable to afford to maintain isn’t going to miraculously change that situation … just look at the Theatre Royal in Chatham. All that listing has achieved is a site which cannot be developed and has remained derelict for decades.

Churches, in particular, suffer from the curse of individuals who want them to be there – to look pretty (or, in this case, architecturally interesting) but don’t actually contribute to them in any way at all. The church doesn’t exist to maintain pretty buildings – that’s not its purpose.

So .. shouldn`t “The Church” be looking for a way to pass responsibility for this unique building on to someone else rather than simply destroying a little peice of history ?
