Chromium OS source code released

Chromium OS has gone open sourceAt 6pm (UK time) today, Internet giants Google held a press conference to give the media an advanced preview of its forthcoming Chrome OS. My verdict: I cannot wait.

In keeping with Google tradition, the project’s source code has already been released for developers to tinker with and build, but computers running the operating system will not be available until late next year.

The main feature of the new operating system is a far superior boot-up time compared with Windows machines – 7 seconds according to some attendees of the presentation.

Personally, I am excited about the new release, though a tad disappointed that it will require a brand new machine to work on.

Everything I do these days (with the exception of photo editing) is in “the cloud” – i.e. all stored online for easy access to view, edit, delete, print, etc. from any machine – and most of my cloud usage is with Google themselves.

The full video of the launch is below, as hosted on another popular Google service.

I’ve been hearing about this for some time. Now, if only it could ? just for once from the USAA ? turn out to be compact, secure, not impenetrable and vastly more like my RISC OS systems than Microsoft’s somewhat blatant rip-off of many of its ideas for Win 95 and beyond.

That, by the way, is why the look and handling changed so hugely, and from then have hugely resembled my system, though still handling far less well). Of course, several visitors to Bill Gates’ office saw the Acorn RiscPc he had there?

Let us hope that Chrome or Chromium (which is it?) will be much better than the tangled mess that is Vista and its derivatives.
