It’s a shame, but the buildings must go…

Twydall Holy Trinity - ? Alan W Collins 2009After weeks of indecision and waiting for the planning application to be thrown open to public consultation, I have finally decided what to write in my letter of representation regarding the demolition of the “iconic” Holy Trinity Church in Twydall.

The following paragraphs contain the content of my letter of representation to Medway Council’s Planning Department regarding application MC/09/2471.

Dear Mr Pullin,

I am writing to register my support for planning application MC/09/2471, relating to the demolition of the Holy Trinity Church in Twydall.

Although the church building is considered iconic for its distinct and interesting design, its viability as a church building for a small congregation has been damaged considerably because of its design and the costs related to its upkeep – particularly the roof.

This application would provide a far more suitable alternative to the current situation. In addition to creating a far more sustainable church and community building, much-needed houses and flats would be erected on the site, with improvements to the landscaping and the building of an access road.

There is no denying that it will be a shame to lose such an iconic building at the heart of Twydall, but what is needed in viewing this application is not nostalgia, but realism. A sense of perspective on the bigger picture is necessary to fully appreciate the situation being faced by the Holy Trinity Church.

In order to save the church community, the church building needs to be replaced by its more sustainable alternative. The small congregation (many of whom are elderly) cannot, and nor should they be expected to, continue footing the bill for the current building.

Alternatives explored, and several attempts at fundraising, have proved fruitless. The only option left to save the church is to demolish this building and start again.

Therefore I urge you to approve this planning application for the sake of the congregation and the community.

Yours sincerely,

Alan W Collins

I strongly believe that Twydall deserves the ?3million investment that the proposed redevelopment of the Holy Trinity Site offers. I believe that the new community and worship centre will offer a beacon of hope, rather than a symbol of decay.

I am one of team members behind the project, and would welcome any queries or further feedback. My email address is marcus@cacp.co.uk.

Many thanks for your comments Mr Collins.
