Journalist Alan Pearce was horrified when he heard that over 3000 laws were created per year, including a new offence in 2007 to “disturb a pack of eggs when instructed not to by an authorised officer”.
Pearce then investigated further incredible-but-true stories, including that of Gareth Corkhill, who was arrested at his home by armoured police for leaving his wheelie bin lid open four inches.
Whose Side Are They On? is the journalist, broadcaster and author’s compilation of absurdities that highlight how Big Brother Government is ruining Britain. Pearce looks at the demonisation and isolation of children from society, as people complain about youths (sorry, young people) hanging around on the streets, whilst increasing bureaucracy makes it almost impossible for adults to supervise them in organised activities.
Pearce, a former Kabul correspondent, also looks at health and safety gone mad and the effects of the Health and Safety Offences Act 2008.
In It’s Health & Safety Gone Mad!, Pearce examines ludicrous cases such as the 400 coastguard units, who have to fill in a “vehicle pre-journey risk assessment” as soon as each shout has been received – but before they can respond.
Or there’s the 12 elderly residents at a sheltered housing complex threatened with eviction and prison by Yorkshire Council – because they continue to feed the birds outside their home.
Both books are published by Gibson Square, formed in 2001 with the aim to contribute to current debates.
