Medway Council austerity? Not with this new job…

It seems that, for all the talk of austerity, Medway Council hasn’t quite got the memo that waste needs to be cut – and The Sunday Times has caught up with them.

According to the (linked) Atticus column, penned by Roland White, Medway Council is advertising for the author’s chosen “non-job” of the week – a Community Development Officer.

“Medway Council is looking for a community development officer (up to ?36,313 a year),” White writes. The role, apparently, is to “ensure compliance with all aspects of the national agenda for resident and community engagement”.

The advert is on the Medway Council website, and after a quick glance at the description (you don’t need to read it all – this author certainly couldn’t manage it!) White’s sarcastic conclusion becomes agreeable:

“Yet another local authority bracing itself for austerity”.

Although I obviously no longer have “inside info” about matters such as this, I can guess that the key words in the job advert are “national agenda”. Until a mass of Labour’s legislation is safely (i.e. after all legalities have been sussed out) repealed, as is on the way, such a vacancy will need to be filled.

Medway Council has operated a “recruitment freeze” policy for a number of years; and it takes a lot of persuasion before a Portfolio Holder even allows a post to come before the Cabinet to consider un-freezing it.

If you want specific details on this position, I suggest emailing the relevant Portfolio Holder (Howard Doe) at the council to find out why this one went ahead.
