Fairview businesses’ concerns vindicated after crash

A group of businesses in Fairview Avenue, Wigmore, who expressed serious safety concerns over a pelican crossing when it was proposed in 2009, have seen the sight they have long been expecting.

Concerns were raised around May 2009 as to the proximity of the crossing to nine junctions (within about 100m) and the relocation of the bus stop, which obscures the view along Fairview Avenue.

Unsurprisingly, the residents’ concerns were ignored by Medway Council, who installed the new crossing regardless.

Now, however, their fears have been realised. Alan W Collins was sent the above photograph this morning, which clearly shows that the businesses were right to be concerned.

The accident happened between 08:00 and 08:15 this morning and, according to sources, was most likely caused by the dangerous road layout installed by the crossing.

Naturally, the local businesses feel that this could have been avoided had Medway Council listened to their concerns in the first place.
