A big thank you to the woman who served me in WH Smith, Gillingham, this afternoon.

Whilst wandering round I noticed Barack Obama’s books The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from my Father, both reads I have been looking to invest in for a while.

The problem was that I only had the money for one, and so I had the difficult task of deciding which book to buy. In the end I decided to opt for the former.

Well, I got to the counter and the lady scanned the book. Then, taking a second look at it, without a moment’s hesitation, turned around and picked up the phone to call, I assume, the duty manager.

Then, after confirmation, she went to the shelf and collected the other book. She scanned that as well, and the computer confirmed what both she and the “duty manager” had both believed: the books were, though unmarked, buy one get one free.

So, without paying a penny extra, I was able to walk out the door with two great reads to look forward to.

So thank you. It is very much appreciated.

So Barack Obama has been elected President of the United States and will take office on January 20, 2009.

It is a fantastic result, not only for a fantastic and charismatic leader, but also for America, who has finally put the past behind her and moved on, and for democracy, with an unprecedented participation and interest Britain could only dream of.

I took a short “bloggers’ break” to concentrate on other things (mostly Uni work, and then plenty of overtime at the Co-operative) but I never stopped following the incredible journey and am delighted that Obama has won.

David Cameron yesterday morning released the following video giving his thoughts on an historic victory:

One must not forget, though, that John McCain is a true American hero who has done nothing but serve his country – both at war and then in Congress – all his life and his loss must be commiserated after a gallant fight to the end.

Brian Griffin, aka comedian Seth MacFarlane, the Griffin family dog in the hugely popular adult cartoon comedy Family Guy has urged people to go out and vote for Barack Obama on November 4.

Okay, there’s celebrity support (will.i.am, for example), but then there’s ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I love Family Guy, and I love Obama, but why produce this:

Somehow, I think that it won’t be long before MacFarlane & Co. start producing hilarious jokes against President (oops, too soon…) Senator Obama.

Yes, I know that John McCain has already announced that he has chosen his running mate – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin – but she is a virtual unknown!

Obama played a risky hand when he chose one of his critics – Joe Biden – to be his running mate, but McCain’s choice of someone who could be his daughter (although Meghan McCain is younger and much better looking!) went further in my opinion.

Of course the general idea is that the ticket is balanced out, and, to be fair, this has happened quite well: McCain, the white, elderly male with much experience, has chosen Palin, the white, middle-aged female (“hey Obama, I’ve chosen a woman, why not you?”) with some experience; while Obama, the black middle-aged male with little experience, has chosen Biden, the white, elderly male with a lot of experience.

The choice of running mate whilst significant at the moment plays only a minor role in the overall shape of the election. What really matters to Americans is achieving a shift away from George Bush, and much like Milliband isn’t the way to achieve the necessary change in this Country, McCain isn’t the key to achieving the necessary change in American.

Only Barack Obama and Joe Biden can.

When I was out in America, I got a glimpse of just how badly people want – and need – change. Change which simply cannot be delivered by the Republican’s 2000 second-best.

In fact, there is only one man who can deliver the change which is needed so badly by millions of Americans currently facing financial difficulties as the full-power of the credit crunch is being felt. That man is Barack Obama.

It may come as a shock to many people after my support for a McCain v. Clinton election last July, and even as late as January this year. However, I am now convinced that Obama is the only man capable of turning around the dire situation in America.

Obviously I don’t agree 100% ideologically (withdraw troops from Iraq, are you insane, Senator?!), but then I don’t agree 100% ideologically with my own Party. What’s important is that Obama has the ideas and vision to take America forward.

The photo in today’s Guardian (not above) is a sad portrayal of Mitt Romney’s campaign – he has money, but lacks friends (or electoral support).

Romney’s solidarity is emphasised by the group of Obama supporters – all too young to vote, by the way – in the photograph above and 4 times the size; the reporters around a faceless Obama to his right (oh the irony) and rival McCain, beaming in front of his supporters to Romney’s left.

The left-wing broadsheet (sorry, “Berliner”) was hardly ever likely to rouse support for a Republican candidat, and they throw their support away from McCain with the quote:

Mr Romney, we disagree on a lot of issues, but I agree, you are the candidate for change.

I wonder what they will print as their headline when McCain, and his vice Giuliani, are sworn in next January…

Sen. Obama – does The Guardian have a problem with printing his face in their paper? Photo: Barack Obama 2008 – www.BarackObama.com

Many people in the British media are chastising Demorcatic candidate Hilary Clinton for not making herslef available to them.

On the contrary, rival Barack Obama has been very open and approachable, as was demonstrated in The Guardian’s ‘Super Tuesday’ guide today, which included a photograph of Obama surrounded by jorunalists’ dictaphones.

It doesn’t, however, show his face. Nor do the other two photographs from his campaign, whereas Clinton and Republican favourite John mcCain have prime, face-on photos with their supporters behind them.

Is The Guardian more interested in his enthusiastic supporters, diverse in their age and ethnicity, than the policy-less potential threat to ‘homeland’ and international security?

Or do they genuinely admire his sporadic naïvety, and are merely openly declaring precisely how photogenic this unexperiences candidate isn’t?
