Alan Collins congratulates Cllr David Carr on his election as Mayor of Medway

Rainham North Councillor David Carr has been officially elected Mayor of Medway, at the Annual Meeting of the Full Council.

Cllr Carr took over from Cllr Val Goulden, who has served Medway fantastically over the past year, at the meeting at the Corn Exchange in Rochester last night.

Over the coming year, Cllr Carr will have to perform a good few hundred duties, beginning with an official photo shoot today and then the Medway Rugby Club’s Annual Dinner on Friday.

I believe that Cllr Carr is an excellent choice of Mayor, a position elected from and by Medway’s 55 councillors, and have no doubt that he will undertake his duties professionally, independently* and with great enthusiasm.

* The Mayoralty is a non-partisan position, so I have refrained from referring to Cllr Carr’s political group and will continue to do so for the duration of the Municipal year.

Labour have failed to protect Gillingham Post Offices

Labour have failed to protect Gillingham Post Offices

Rainham North Councillor David Carr last week issued a statement to the local press, condemning the Government’s failure to protect vulnerable citizens by pledging to close not one, not two, but three Gillingham Post Offices:

“I am appalled at the way in which this Labour government has failed to protect the most vulnerable of our good people in our society. Labour has stolen our pensions; It has presided over the collapse of our NHS dentist services; and now they are to allow the Royal Mail to close down our Post Offices.

The Post Office is a British institution - they are even on OS maps along with churches and other important places. The great British public look for, and expect to see a Post Office wherever they are. It is our intention as Conservative Councillors to do that we can to prevent this closure from happening.

Julie New, the postmistress at the Station Road PO in Rainham, is arranging for petitions to be distributed to all the shops and traders in Rainham, and I hope all of our residents will sign them.”

An evening with Benazir Bhutto

An evening with Benazir Bhutto

I HAVE been relatively quiet over the weekend in terms of postings on this blog, and there is one good reason for that: I have been a very busy boy!

Not politically, well mostly not politically, anyway. On Saturday I was working, before going to my soon-to-be-uncle’s stag night and on Sunday morning, I attended a christening (one down, two to go as I shall explain in another post on another day). Sunday evening, however, I got back into politics - well, sort of - by attending an evening with Benazir Bhutto.

Conservative Councillors go green with low-energy light bulbs

Conservative Councillors go green

RAINHAM North Councillors Vaughan Hewett and David Carr were so enthused by David Cameron’s efforts to make the Conservative Party and their Councils green, that they have bought all 33 Medway Conservative Councillors an energy saving light bulb so that they are the greenest group of councillors in Medway.

They gave bulbs as gifts to their colleagues at a group meeting held Monday, July 2 at the Strood Civic Centre.
