Politicians are famed for spin and for trying to make even the darkest days bright and breezy. This is never more evident than following an election defeat.

Back in the local elections in 2007, Twydall’s winning Labour councillors spun their number-of-votes increase as increased support.

They may have got more people out to vote than in 2003, but, as I revealed back in June 2007, when you look beyond the bare number of votes, the facts hidden beneath are far more revealing.

In fact, whilst the number of votes had increased, the share of the vote had decreased, allowing for an increased vote share for the Conservatives and UKIP. Because of ward changes, it is impossible to view the pattern further back in time, however I would bet that such has been the case since 1997.

So why am I bringing this up again? Well take a look at this video and you’ll see why. Prime Minister Brown clearly states that the Conservative vote fell as well in Norwich North, just as the Twydall Labour Councillors said their vote increased in 2007.

Spin is in the wording of the phrase, and (dare I say it) Mr Brown is correct – to a point. But, it is when Mr Brown starts to open his mouth that you must remember to keep your fingers close to the salt shaker.

In 2005, Labour scored 21,097 votes, the Conservatives 15,638 – that makes a Labour majority of 5,459 when 61.1% of the electorate turned out to vote. Not bad for the country’s most generous landlord*, Dr Ian Gibson.

Thursday’s by-election saw Labour’s vote drop to 6,243, and the Conservatives to 13,591. That’s a dramatic drop for Labour and a minimal drop for the Conservatives. What is more revealing, however, is that with a substantially decreased turnout (45.88% to be precise), Chloe Smith achieved an increased majority – 7,348.

The Conservative share of the vote increased by 6.3% while Labour’s dropped by a staggering 26.7%! That’s something Mr Spin won’t tell you.

Gordon Brown is a desperate Prime Minister hanging on by the skin of his teeth. He is relying on transparent spin and petty half-truths and it is embarrassing to our entire country.

The Time for Change in this country’s leadership has never been more evident than it is now.

*If you don’t understand the reference, Dr Gibson allowed his tenant – his daughter – to live in his flat rent-free. A flat paid for by the UK taxpayer.

National anger at the Labour Party has allowed two British National Party candidates – including its Leader Nick Griffin, who has a spent criminal conviction – to win seats in the European Parliament in the North of England.

The party has also been pushed in to fifth place in the South of England by the Green Party, although its number of seats has not changed. Nationally, with Scotland and Northern Ireland yet to declare, Labour came in third, behind the Conservatives and UKIP.

The BNP, described recently by Lord Tebbit as ‘Labour With Racism‘, took seats from Labour in the North West (Nick Griffin) and Yorkshire and the Humber (Andrew Brons), causing accusations that Labour’s failing government was to blame for the ‘terribly sad moment‘.

Labour’s Deputy Leader Harriet Harman was forced to admit that they had suffered a ‘very dismal result‘ in the European elections, facing the worst defeat since 1922.

In the South East, which includes Medway, and in the South West, Labour came fifth, trailing behind Conservatives, UKIP, Lib Dems and even the Green Party. Although no seats changed in the South East, in the South West, Labour lost one of their two MEPs to the Conservatives.

The result will put even more pressure on Gordon Brown, who is today facing a crunch meeting with the Parliamentary Labour Party, to resign.

James Purnell has become the fifth Labour minister to resign this week, and speculation has been growing as to whether Gordon Brown will resign or call an election.

My answer would be no. Brown is a coward – he is scared of elections because he knows he will lose. He’s not interested in the interests of the country – he’s only interested in himself and his being leader of this once-great country.

It is also unlikely he will quit as leader. His actions appear to be near-splitting the Labour Party, yet Brown doesn’t care. He’s not interested in the interests of his party – he’s only interested in himself and his being leader of his once-popular party.

Brown won’t resign or call an election – he’s going to cling on for as long as possible. We can’t stop him, but Labour MPs can.

It’s your time to show us your integrity and force him to resign – before its too late for your survival!

On Sunday, I received information from one of my sources that Gillingham and Rainham MP Paul Clark was in Twydall ‘looking for ‘supporters’.

The instant reaction to this news has to be ‘he’ll be lucky’ – and for once I do not mean that in a partisan manner. Indeed all parties have been guilty of breaching the ‘spirit of the rules’ in one way or another, if not the actual rules in some well-documented cases.

The problem has been caused by a mixture of both greedy MPs, and the seemingly laissez-faire attitude towards claims, many of which were allegedly agreed over ‘a drink and a smoke’. Although most MPs have not actually, it would appear, broken the rules, it is apparent after three weeks of revelations that these meetings were used to persuade fees office officials to look favorably on claims that may not have been entirely within the spirit of the rules.

An obvious result of the sleazy stench emanating from Westminster is an increased mistrust in all politicians – a bad reputation that will take years to recover. MPs looking for support are doing the right thing, if explaining their actions and apologizing at the same time, but sadly they are unlikely to discover too much sympathy along the way.

The backlash will be felt in Thursday’s local and European elections, when protest votes will likely be at an all-time high. Brown will order a reshuffle, Cameron will call for a general election to cleanse Parliament and Clegg will wave and shout from the sidelines like an under-11s football manager, eager for improvement but unable to achieve it.

All politicians are going about this the wrong way, though. Instead of blaming each other or the rules, they should be blaming themselves and their own greed.

Only then will people start to accept that they are sincere in their wish for change and begin to regain trust in their servants once more.

Gordon Brown became Prime Minister in mid-2007. Since then, he has been almost constantly behind in the polls, except when he looked almost certain to call a snap election, before realising he’d lose and bottling it.

Those days seem a mere distant memory now, with the fierce onset of recession and increasing public mistrust. I bet he’s kicking himself; had he called an election in 2007, he would now be Leader of the Opposition, berating Prime Minister Cameron for failing to bring the United Kingdom out of a mess made, in part, by ex-Prime Minister Brown.

However, it is Brown on whom all the anger must be concentrated, and rightly so. For those who believe in karma, he is the epitomy. Brown oversaw ten years of economic growth, building on the strong foundations laid by the Conservatives under Major (post-Black Wednesday, of course), yet failed to keep safe an adequate reserve of many, or indeed any reserve at all, in case things turned sour.

Perhaps he though himself invincible, or able to do all things. Perhaps he thought things would never turn sour under his control. Or maybe it was the opposite. Maybe he didn’t expect Labour to win another term in office and though the disaster would strike with the Conservatives in office, ready for him to pounce back, with his record on handling the economy, just one parliamentary term later.

Either way this was pure idiocy. Granted, the recession is a global phenomenen. However, thanks to Brown, there was no spare cash to help weather the storm. Only a mountain of debt. And his solution to the problem is to pile more debt on top. Indeed public borrowing will have reached an all-time high of ?175bn this year. Any corporate Chief Executive would have been given the boot by now, or at least had constant stern and frank discussions with the directors. Brown, on the other hand, has had no such discussions with the directors of UK plc – the electorate – and instead treats them with contempt.

He is already taking his near-certain electoral defeat badly. His mood swings and anger have been well documented. The public hate him and want him out. Now. Not in fourteen months time but NOW!

Sadly, though, it won’t be. Brown doesn’t know how to take defeat graciously, and he certainly doesn’t do ‘gracious’ – whatever that is. His election night will be depressing, his resignation speech bitter, his many Labour critics jubilant. With Brown out of the picture, they can rebuild their Party and possibly – but only possibly – provide a credible alternative government to the, by then, ruling Conservatives.

Since 1974, three Prime Ministers have lost General Elections. In May 1997, Major lost the election and stood down as leader of the Conservative Party, replaced by William Hague, in June 1997. He left the Commons in 2001. Before him, Callaghan, in May 1979. He resigned as leader of the Labour Party, replaced by Michael Foot, in September 1980. He left the Commons in 1987.

The third Prime Minister knew how to take defeat graciously. Perhaps it was because of his presumed homosexuality, or maybe he was a proper gentlement, whatever that is. Either way, Prime Minister Heath lost in February 1974 – not the popular vote, he had a plurality, but Labour had a plurality of Commons seats and in March formed a minority government.? Heath replied by vowing to continue as leader of the Conservative Party, which lasted until 1975. He called a leadership election, expecting to comfortably win, but did not expect Margaret Thatcher. He left the contest in February.

Rather than slither into the shadows, or slide away from politics, Heath stayed in the Commons until 2001. As Father of the House, he oversaw the election of Betty Boothroyd and Micahel Martin as Speakers. He knew how to take defeat, even if he had made some stupid mistakes during his Premiership, and continue in public service.

With the clock fast ticking, perhaps Brown could do some research on Heath. He might learn a thing or two … and maybe collect a few tips along the way!

As most regular readers will be aware, I try to make as many of my posts as impersonal as possible. However, I will make exception for this next one.

I’ve had first-hand experience in the past of the dangers of writing blog posts in anger without pausing for thought, but right about now I’d very much like to stick two fingers up at Darling and Brown – ’cause it’s no worse than they’ve done to me and tens, maybe hundreds of thousands, if not millions, like me!

Alcohol (moderation), fags (when necessary – i.e. too often at the moment) and petrol (complete necessity) have all been taxed more heavily by the dour one and his white-haired, black-eyebrowed sidekick.

Tax on alcohol has gone up 2% as of midnight. For me that’s an annual rise of about ?7 – not including other price rises.

Tax on fags has also gone up 2% as of 18:00 yesterday. That translates as roughly 7p extra per pack of 20. For me that’s an annual rise (if I manage to continue smoking at my new cut-back rate) of ?31.

Fuel duty is to rise by 2p per litre in September. Then in April next year, and a further three years, it will rise by 1p above inflation. For me that’s an increase for next year alone of around ?71.

In total, thanks to the morons in charge, I will be almost ?110 worse off over the next year – mostly due to petrol – and I’m already struggling enough.

Yet I’m not alone, and my predicament is trivial compared to those who currently face repossession and that terrifying knock on the door from the bailiffs. I am a mere statistic – and I would be willing to accept that if the government cared more about its sixty million statistics than it did headline-grabbing policies and opinion polls.

This inept government is on its way out. And it knows it. Bob Crow of the Rail Maritime and Transport Union called yesterday’s budget ‘the final political suicide note of the New Labour government’.

Out of online characteristic and style for this particular website, I should like to apologise in advance to anyone who may be offended by my following remarks. But I am consumed by anger and this blog (aside from perhaps my bedroom wall) is my only outlet.

It is only just that I say to Gordon and his darling Darling, on behalf of everyone who suffered before, yet suffer more thanks to yesterday’s budget: ‘f**k you!’.

Now call an election so we can all say it properly!

By now most of you will have heard about the disgraceful arrest of Conservative MP Damian Green for doing his duty in trying to hold the government to account.

I shall lay out before you the facts, the speculation and my opinions, and then allow you to formulate your own opinions on this matter.

FACTS

It is so hard to distinguish fact from speculation in this matter, however what is irrefutable is that last Thursday, November 27, Conservative MP Damian Green was arrested and held for nine hours, before being released on bail. His offices and homes were searched by police. The Serjeant at Arms, Jill Pay, allowed the police to enter Parliament to conduct the search. Speaker Michael Martin was made aware that the arrest and search was to take place.

SPECULATION

It is widely assumed that, if not Gordon Brown, at least Home Secretary Jacqui Smith was made aware of the arrest prior to it taking place. It is also known that Michael Martin knew the arrest was to take place, but that he purposefully allowed it to happen is a matter of speculation – although widely assumed to be true.

MY OPINIONS

I am always loathe to calling Britain a police state, and in fact many important features of a police state are missing from the picture. I also refuse to speculate on the content of ongoing police investigations. However, the fact that an investigation was allowed sets for our elected representatives a dangerous precedent. Even the Broon, as seen in my previous post, has smugly utilised leaks from civil servants.

All Green’s private case files and constituency data are now in the hands of the police, and any number of officers may view the contents throughout the investigation. Mr Green himself is now unable to continue the role he was elected to do because the police are being ridiculously intrusive – at the behest of the Labour Government in a thinly veiled attempt to smear the Conservatives, which seems to have backfired spectacularly!

The bare truth is, though, that Broon has not built for us a police state, instead he has cemented the solid foundations, which no successor will be able to destroy. The Labour Party long ago abandoned all pretence of democracy, and it is us who will pay the price in the decades to come!
