Cllr O’Brien congratulates Medway’s exam winners

Medway Councillor Mike O’Brien has paid tribute to the hard work students put into their GCSE and post-16 studies.
Cllr O’Brien, who was elected to Rainham Central Ward in May 2007, told the full meeting of the Council last night that “a lot has been said about the ‘dumbing down’ of exams” that simply is not true.
“The fact is that exams are getting harder and harder, and students work really, really hard. Let us congratulate them for getting these fantastic results.”
Cllr O’Brien, who teaches Key Skills to 16-19 year-old students at Canterbury College, made his remarks following a statement in the debate by Cllr Juby, who also praised the results.

Mayor of Medway 2008/2009

Yes, it’s that time of year again, when the selection of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor gets underway, with the official Council noting of which group will have the Mayoralty.
This year, perhaps unsurprisingly, the Conservative Group will be bestowed the great honour of the Mayoralty - using an undemocratic system which I totally disagree with.
So, in a move which may make me unpopular amongst many members, I am going to bite the bullet, and say who I, if I were in charge of the Conservative Group, would appoint Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Mayor John Ward (only joking Jane Etheridge
)
Deputy Mayor Mike O’Brien
As always, it is important for me to point out that the two aforementioned names are presented as a matter of my personal opinion, and that I will fully support whoever is chosen by the Group.

Rehman Chishti won the biggest majority in Medway as the Conservatives held the Council with an increased majority

SOME saw the local elections on “Super Thursday” as the biggest test of public opinion since the General Election two years ago. The mainstream media has been spinning the results for a couple of days now, so I can finally analyse the situation.
Comparisons have been made between this result and the potential result at the next General Election, so I compared the vote between Cllr Rehman Chishti and Sheila Clark, mother of Paul Clark, MP for Gillingham. As shown in the diagram, Reh achieved far greater support (2204 to 503 votes) and, overall, Reh achieved the highest majority in Medway: 1123 votes ahead of Liberal Bob Collinson.
