Alan’s Core Beliefs

Everyone is individual in what they believe in. Everyone has their own ideas of how they would run the Country, and what policies or aims they would champion/implement.

The following is my answer to the all-important question “what do you believe in?”.

Devolved and Local Government

I believe…

  1. that local people should have greater control over their local services.
  2. that each Constituent State of the United Kingdom should have its own Parliament.

Education

I believe…

  1. that schools should have greater freedom in the construction of their curriculum.
  2. that qualifications should not be modular, that instead a series of exams at the end of the complete course should determine the grade.
  3. in the scrapping of the Educational Maintenance Allowance.
  4. in the scrapping of University tuition fees.

Enterprise and Social Justice

I believe…

  1. that we all have our own part to play in crime prevention.
  2. that a modern-day national service should be compulsory for 16 year-olds.
  3. that the retirement age should be raised to increase financial security in retirement and to allow those who wish to keep working to do so.
  4. that people on benefits should be gradually encouraged back into work.

International

I believe…

  1. that we should continue to support Israel, but make limited concessions to Palestine in order to achieve a lasting peace.
  2. that benign dictators should be left to keep their Countries under control, but that forceful dictators should face sanctions, and, if necessary, military action.
  3. that we were wrong to invade Iraq, but that we should consider military action against Zimbabwe’s regime.
  4. that we should consider incorporating our overseas territories into the central Westminster Parliament for monthly legislative meetings.

Judiciary and the Law

I believe…

  1. that senior judges should be elected so as to be more accountable.
  2. that Police Chiefs should be elected so as to be more accountable.
  3. that ID cards should remain voluntary.
  4. that the Human Rights Act should be replaced by a British Bill of Rights.
  5. that police targets should be scrapped, police bureaucracy should be culled and police officers should be out on the streets.

Morality

I believe…

  1. that prostitution should not be legalised.
  2. that stricter controls should be introduced on access to pornography, particularly on the internet.
  3. that the number of weeks into a pregnancy an abortion may be carried out should be greatly reduced, possible to 0, except in exceptional circumstances.
  4. that sex education should not be taught from such an early age (if at all).
  5. that euthanasia should not be legalised.

Parliament

I believe…

  1. that Parliamentary terms should be fixed at four years.
  2. that the House of Lords should be renamed, become a fully-elected legislative body and have more power.
  3. that elections to both Houses should be via the Single Transferrable Vote system.
  4. in more free votes in both Houses to allow for each MP to vote according to their Constituents’ wishes, rather than their party’s.
  5. that Britain should have a codified Constitution.

Religion

I believe…

  1. in one God, the Father, the Almighty.
  2. that Religious schools (of whatever faith) are entitled to State funding.
  3. that prayer should be allowed in State and Private schools.
  4. that Britain should be officially recognised as a constitutionally Christian nation.

Feel free to comment on any of my beliefs here.
